It is hard to avoid facing the fact that smoking is not good for our health. However, what you may not have realized is that it is also a contributing factor to the condition of snoring.

Whilst we all realize that smoking can lead to heart and lung diseases many people still choose to smoke. Perhaps knowing that smoking is making their snoring worse and alienating their loved ones, will be the incentive persistent smokers need to give up the weed for good?

Recent studies have proven that there is a link between smoking and snoring with smokers more likely to have a higher incidence of snoring than non-smokers. Another frightening statistic is that those who are exposed to cigarette smoke in their environment, who are effectively passive smokers, are more likely to be heavy snorers too.

Smoking is known to cause respiratory problems so it should come as no surprise to learn that it contributes to and causes snoring. It is thought that the smoke inhaled by the person irritates the delicate mucous membranes in the airways causing them to become inflamed and swollen which then blocks the airways and causes snoring.

Researchers are now also investigating what damage nicotine can do to the nervous system as it is thought that prolonged exposure to this chemical substance can cause nerve damage within the airways.

We all know smoking is addictive. There is a chemical addiction to nicotine and there is a habitual addiction to smoking to consider too. Smoking is harmful to the smoker and also to anyone else who is exposed to the cigarette smoke in the environment. It is shocking to realize that such passive smoking carries with it the same risks of smoking related diseases and conditions, including snoring.

Despite the well documented facts about the damage smoking does to the body, many people find it hard to give up. Even social pressure does not seem to help. Perhaps by realizing that smoking can also cause problems in the bedroom, people will consider giving up for another reason altogether.

Some smokers persist because they believe that the damage has been done. In fact this is not true. The damage caused by smoking can be undone and smokers who give up will notice an improvement in their health and wellbeing within a relatively short period of time – and this includes a reduction in the volume and frequency of the snoring. Once they have stopped smoking, their snoring problem should decrease also.

As a smoker, it will be impossible to cure your snoring problem if you are not prepared to give up cigarettes. It really is as simple as that. By giving up smoking you not only have a much better chance of not snoring but you also improve so many other aspects of your health and wellbeing – including your relationships.

If you give up smoking, you will not only lose your snore and improve your relationships and your health. You may find your relationships also improve.

When snoring problems are too much for the normal, commonly used remedies, it may be the right idea to undergo a surgical procedure to correct the problem. There are many different types of surgery to connect snoring problems, and people need certain surgeries based on the make-up of their body. The proper type of surgeon to consult for this type of operation would be an otolaryngologist.

These doctors work with specialization in issues concerning the ears, nose, and throat. Since surgeries related to snoring are billed as a cosmetic process, they are rarely covered by insurance and can be quite costly. Most of the surgical procedures related to snoring are performed in a physician’s office, most commonly under a local anesthetic.

One of the most common surgeries for snoring would be a laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty, commonly referred to as a LAUP. This is a modification of another procedure known as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, or UPPP, which is also occasionally performed. In a LAUP procedure, the surgeon uses a laser to cut away the uvula which is the dangling tissue that is found in the back of the roof of the mouth. This procedure generally fixes snoring for those whose airway obstruction was caused by their uvula.

Another surgical procedure to aid snoring is radio frequency tissue ablation, or RFTA. Done under the trade name Somnoplasty, and only just very recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998, RFTA is performed to minimize the uvula. More than one session of this surgery may need to be performed. Since this type of treatment has been approved so recently, not too much published data on it is currently available.

In February of 2000, another tissue ablation procedure was approved for use with snoring. Known as Coblation-Channeling, this method uses the energy of radio frequencies to reduce in size tissue in the airway that is obstructive. It can also fully remove tissue if this is needed. However, even less data has been published about this procedure.

The tongue suspension procedure is a surgery that was approved by the FDA in 1998. Under the trade name Repose, this surgery involves keeping the person’s tongue from falling back over the airway during periods of sleep. This is done by inserting a small screw into the lower jaw bone and placing stitches below the tongue. This procedure is usually performed in line with other procedures, and little clinical data has been published for this surgery.

Last, but not least, is nasal deviation surgery. Obstructions in the nose or a deviated septum can be the cause of a restricted airway which may be leading to snoring. These surgeries can also help to improve breathing during the day, and for that reason, are often covered by insurance policies. Surgeries are also sometimes used that help to fix the jaw line, stopping snoring problems.

As with any surgery, you need to seriously consider your options when facing these circumstances. Surgeries are a radical procedure and choosing the right doctor is an important step. Be sure you heavily research both the surgery you are expected to undergo as well as finding out about the doctor.

How many times have you complained to a friend about the incessant snoring of your partner?  You’ve talked about how tired you feel with the endless interruptions of your nights sleep because your husband’s snoring is window shattering loud. Or maybe you’ve compared it to a motorcycle engine, a thunderstorm or a chainsaw.  If so, you are not alone. Women all across the world have the same problem. For you guys whose wives snore, you have to admit the noise is not as loud and rarely does it disturb your sleep. For women with snoring parents it is quiet different. Men simply snore louder.

Believe it or not snoring has become such an insurmountable problem that it has become grounds for divorce. The lack of sleep, base on the nighttime snore serenade, of both partners can create multiple problems in a relationship.  Two overtired people are not as likely to be patient with each other. One blames the other for their lack of sleep. The snorer becomes fed up with the daily blame while still having to cope with his own state of tiredness.  Work suffers for both of them and so does their home life.

In studies done on snoring and relationships over half the couples agreed that the nightly noise caused severe arguments. Eighty percent said they often slept in another room just to try and get a good night sleep. Ten percent said it was bad enough that they thought seriously about leaving their spouse.  Often the pleas of the non-snoring partner are ignored, as the snorer does not believe anything can be done. This is seen as a very negative reaction by the non-snorer who often becomes convinced that her partner is just doing it to annoy her. This impacts on the whole relationship. It also impacts on the intimate relationship of the couple in a negative way.  Twenty five percent of couples being studied confirmed that problem.  As well, if a couple chooses to sleep in separate rooms, it not only affects their sex life, but also affects the end of the night relax and chat time that a couple shares. In a relationship these are important non-sexual intimate moments that play a pivotal role in keeping two people tuned into one another.

Sometimes it gets to a point where the couple must decide if their relationship is worth rescuing. They’re spending less time together, sleeping in separate rooms or the non-snoring partner is either spending too much of the night awake or with a pillow over her ears.  Fortunately, if you value your partner there are things that can be done to save the relationship.  Begin by seeing your doctor.  That could determine the next step in what snoring cures to try. Some may be no more than simple lifestyle changes while others may include the use of appliances or other devices. After all the nighttime difficulties, if you want to keep your relationship on track sometimes sacrifices are needed on both sides.

Sleep apnea is a very serious condition that is not always treated as such, sometimes with disastrous results. A sign of sleep apnea is snoring, since to snore is a reaction to the constriction of nasal airways and constrictions in the throat. Sadly, this sign, which should lead others to notice a problem, is often ignored. The conclusion, or more often the complaint, that my partner snores is often the only statement made before it is forgotten. Unfortunately, sleep apnea can kill; as it did December 29, 2004, just seven days after his forty third birthday, when national football hero Reggie White sadly passed away. Final results showed that, at least in part, his death was caused by the sleep disorder called sleep apnea.

Sleep can be very dangerous for people with sleep apnea. It’s caused by a relaxing of the muscles in the air passageways, which can make for episodes of breathing interruptions. Breathing is often restarted by a loud rumbling snore. These non-breathing events can last for anywhere from ten to thirty seconds. The scary part is that someone can stop breathing as many as one hundred times in an average night.

Recent studies on athletes are coming up with some startling results. In professional football’s push for “bigger is better” players more football players are obese now than ever before.  There are concerns that with nearly four hundred players weighing over three hundred pounds they are setting a dangerous precedent. Based on the large necks of these men they are destined to have problems. The windpipe will start to get closed off as the larger tongue drops back during sleep. The uvula will block the airway and as the swollen tissues block the throat the athlete will have further difficulties with snoring and potentially develop serious life threatening sleep disorders.  Surprisingly, studies have shown that fourteen percent of all professional football players suffer from sleep apnea. While up to thirty four percent of offensive and defensive linemen, Reggie White was one of these, are likely to be sufferers. When looking for signs and symptoms, loud snoring and daytime sleeping are the prime signals. Though it can be predicted pretty accurately by using a body mass index and checking neck size.

It’s a difficult thing to be told that what you do for a living, and make incredibly good money at, may kill you. But for many of these athletes that is exactly what the studies are showing.  Despite their claims that after their careers are over they’ll lose the excessive weight too many have found that impossible after years of working hard to put it on. Are the coaches pushing these athletes to get bigger and stay bigger, the answer is absolutely. The average weight of a player has increased by ten percent since 1985. This higher weight not only risks more complicated injuries, it risks life threatening sleep disorders. The first sign of which is snoring. Let’s hope that next time the signs are recognized.

Do you have a snoring problem that you need to address? There are a host of reasons why one may be sawing logs at night, and determining the cause of your snoring problem is the first step on the road to recovery. While in many cases, the source of a sneezing issue is due to obesity, alcohol, or sleeping pill usage, many fail to realize that allergies are a leading cause of snoring. When people complain of suffering due to sleepiness, fatigue or lack of concentration while experiencing allergic effects, often times the source of the problem is a sleep disorder related to those allergens. When allergies take hold, oftentimes the nasal airway becomes congested, causing issues with the way we breathe while we sleep. As your body tries to force air through the blocked passageways, parts of your mouth and throat rub against each other and you experience what we know as snoring. While snoring seems like a harmless issue, it can actually cause many complications with your body that should not be overlooked in the slightest.

Children and adults that have allergies often experience fragmented sleep patterns and a lack of significant deep sleep, both in terms of quality and amount of sleep received. This is a problem that can have more significant and far-reaching effects than many of us may think. A lack of good sleep hurts your body in numerous ways. For instance, reduction of this necessary sleep affects children by causing them to become irritable, and a lack of concentration often drives them towards poor performance in school. While not appearing to be visibly sleepy on the day to day basis, these children often fall asleep rapidly when all external stimuli are removed and they are placed in a dark room. In addition to the problem of actual allergies causing snoring, there is also an issue with the anti-histamine medications that are associated with clearing up allergies. Studies have shown that the usage of anti-histamine medicines with sedative effects results in decreased school performance, regardless of how tired the child may actually appear to be. The only over-the-counter anti-histamine that is not associated with an increase in sleepiness is the compound known as loratadine, which can be found in the medications Claritin and Alavert. One recommendation for allergy help would be to use a decongestant as opposed to an anti-histamine, to nullify the effect that the medications have on your sleep patterns.

In addition to following these guidelines regarding your allergies and snoring, there are a couple of other tips you should heed when trying to establish a regular sleep pattern:

Try to follow a regular schedule throughout both the week and the weekend, while trying to avoid overly napping.

Get exercise – your boy needs it and it helps you to fall asleep.

Avoid consuming alcohol within 4 hours of falling asleep – it is a depressant which relaxes your throat muscles, complicating a snoring problem.

Avoid caffeine before bed – self explanatory.

If you follow these tips as well as addressing your allergy issue, you should be on the road to recovery! Best of luck!

There are more than 15 million people in the UK who snore, so this means that the number of partners being kept awake during the night, is also well into the millions. The problem is, there is often a large impact on a relationship from someone who is snoring and some marriages and relationships are often in jeopardy as a partner is forced to sleep in another room.

It is important that a snorer identifies what type of snorer they are before attempting to find a cure to alleviate their problem. The noise that a snorer makes is due to the structure in the mouth, throat or nose vibrating. Therefore by finding which part of the structure is vibrating, treatment options can be identified and given more successfully.

Many people regard snoring as a joke but it has been known to destroy the strongest of marriages. This is usually caused by the partner’s sleep deprivation as when tired and irritable, rational decisions are not usually made, allowing them not to function properly. Some people who are deprived of their sleep may even feel physically ill. Problems such as these do not help a relationship blossom. As mentioned above, snoring can create serious problems between couples. The partner often tries to stop the snoring or find themselves lying there for hours listening to the sounds and wishing that they too were asleep.
Not to mention the snorer and their problems. They are usually getting kicked in the ribs or banished to another room, these all create disturbances to their sleep making them tired and irritable and changing the dynamics or bedtime. This often results in the bedtime intimacy and chatting being ruined and nobody wanting to sleep with the snorer. This then makes the snorer feel isolated resulting in an unhappy relationship. It’s easy to see why the ramifications of snoring are considered quite serious.

The most common triggers for snoring are being overweight, drinking and smoking. It is mainly those who are 50 to 59 years of age who snore the worst.
So what can be done about the problems of snoring? Visiting the doctor (the snorer that is) should essentially be the first step as snoring is not only a nuisance; it can be a dangerous condition, especially if it is accompanied by sleep apnoea, a condition where the body is deprived of oxygen. It could be pointed out that it is a dangerous condition if they are at risk of being kicked and pummelled by their sleeping partner!

Those who sleep alone find it very difficult to ascertain whether or not they snore and if so, the level they snore at. Some are aware that they snore as they wake themselves up due to the noise. Some are even awakened by their neighbours who bang on their walls due to their snoring. A good indicator for those people who suspect they snore but sleep alone is waking in the morning and not feeling rested following an average number of hours of sleep. It is therefore advisable that you see a doctor for advice and possible treatment.

The most common cause of snoring is obesity.

It therefore follows that the simplest and most straight forward cure for snoring is to lose weight.

If only it were that simple!

Snoring is caused by pressure on the airways obstructing the free flow of air. In a sleeping position, when you carry excess weight, the airways become obstructed by the pressure of the additional weight resting on them, especially if you carry additional weight around your neck and throat.

Losing weight and exercising to tone the muscles and tissues is the simplest and most effective way to stop snoring.

We all know that it is unhealthy to be overweight. We know about the risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis being caused by obesity and yet, for so many, the will power to take the required action to lose weight is missing.

Snoring is just another complaint to add to the long list of conditions worsened by obesity. The difference is that as well as impacting your own health your snoring can also jeopardise the health of your loved ones and it has the potential to destroy your relationships.

Losing weight does not have to be about hardship and sacrifice. In fact, if you are prepared to exercise and increase your activity levels it may mean that you do not need to restrict your calorie intake – that will really depend on your diet.

It is important to speed up the metabolism in a natural way. This not only helps with weight loss but it also assists with many physiological functions, particularly elimination and excretion. With the increased oxygen and improved circulation every cell of the body can function more efficiently and eliminate waste products more effectively.

With the body ridding itself of toxins rather than storing them in body fat there is less to aggravate and inflame the delicate systems of the body. This means there is less congestion and inflammation in the mucous membranes – and of course less or no snoring.

Aerobic exercise is best for giving the body a metabolic boost – but this does not mean you have to endure long hours in a dance studio. It is possible to incorporate aerobic exercise into your day in many different ways. You just need to be creative. Take the stairs rather than the lift; take a walk at lunchtime rather than surfing the internet, walk the dog or if you don’t have a dog of your own, walk your neighbour’s dog. Housework is excellent aerobic activity as is gardening and cycling.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, it is advisable to check with your doctor before embarking on any exercise routine. Take things slowly at first and gradually increase your exercise levels – your partner will notice an improvement in your snoring levels which will be an incentive to continue the good work.

Your partner will appreciate the new fitter you and he or she will be much less irritable and tired once they are able to get a good night’s sleep without you snoring away next to them.

There are so many other health benefits to losing that excess weight – you have nothing to lose, except your snore!

Snoring is a pretty common problem. As much as 40% of the adult American populations experience some snoring. However, few know that snoring can be an impending sign of a sleep disorder. There are differences between normal snoring and other disorders, and the effect sleep disorders can have on your health are huge.

Sleep apnoea is a problem that is like an advanced form of snoring that can be very damaging to your health. A person afflicted with this sleep disorder has obstructions of breathing lasting 10 seconds or longer while asleep, causing them to wake up repeatedly and damage brain cells due to lack of breath. Sleep apnoea symptoms include loud snoring, waking up with headaches, waking up during the night with a feeling that you are choking, insomnia, issues with staying asleep, being overweight, waking up gasping for air, waking up sweating, waking up with a feeling of not being refreshed, and having trouble staying awake during the day.

Known medically as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome, it is characterized by intense upper airway obstructions that occur whilst asleep. The airway may be obstructed by a number of different things, such as large tonsils, a large tongue, excess tissue in the airway, obstruction of the nasal passages, or an abnormal jaw structure. This syndrome can lead to depression, headaches, high blood pressure, rapid weight gain, frequent trips to the bathroom during the night, difficulty concentrating, and difficulty concentrating. In addition, people with untreated obstructive sleep apnoea run a higher risk of heart failure and stroke. A potentially life threatening condition, sleep apnoea should not be treated lightly. If you suspect you or someone you love is afflicted, it is important to do a sleep test, known as polysomnography. This is the process used to diagnose sleep apnea. These tests are painless, and are often covered by insurance carriers.

Sleep apnea may be treated in several ways, depending on the severity of the condition. Mild sleep apnea victims are often told to take such steps as losing weight or sleeping on their side. It is important to follow steps for treating apnea, as it is a debilitating condition that gets worse over time. For more severe cases of apnea, a process known as a CPAP is performed. Standing for continuous positive airway pressure, a machine blows air into your nose with a nose mask, keeping the airway open and free of obstructions. If the CPAP process does not successfully cure the apnea, a Bi-PAP machine is used to deliver air through the nose at two different pressures, with variations for inhaling and exhaling.

If none of the above treatments work to heal this harmful disorder, sometimes surgery is necessary. There are several surgical procedures that can be performed, many of which are done to help increase the size of the upper airway. These include clearing excess tissues or altering the jaw structure to better necessitate proper breathing. This is usually performed if the positive airway pressure treatments are unsuccessful. Hopefully, you now know exactly what you need to know about sleep apnea, one of the most serious sleep disorders related to snoring.

Are you wondering if snoring is a problem that you can pass on to your children? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, you can. According to a research study published in the journal “Chest”, children that have at least one parent that snored were three times more likely to snore themselves when compared to children whose parents had no snoring problem. The study was undertaken in order to more accurately determine the inheritance of snoring due to the fact that snoring is “the primary symptom of sleep-disordered breathing”.

Truly, snoring is a warning sign for the dreaded affliction known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, or OSA. This disorder causes the sufferer to stop breathing while asleep due to airway obstructions. Basic, primary snoring is hindered breathing, but it is breathing nonetheless. When Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is present, the victim will stop breathing for periods longer than 10 seconds while asleep, waking them up to make them gasp and choke for air.

This problem is not only an issue in the evening, either. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea leaves the afflicted with sore throats and headaches when they wake up. The lack of sleep due to the OSA is responsible for a lack of concentration, irritability, and bad behavior. If OSA is left untreated, it can increase blood pressure, lower blood-oxygen levels, make the heart work harder, and cause a greater occurrence of heart attacks and strokes.

For the research study, 681 children in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital medical centre were studied. The researchers also found that African-American children were roughly 3 times as likely to snore then children of other races. In addition, the study showed that children who tested positive for Atopy (an early indicator of asthma and allergies) were twice as likely to snore as those children who tested negative.

Dr Maninder Kalra, the lead author of the report, stated that the benefits of the research study included identifying which children snored so that doctors could more accurately identify the high-risk groups for sleeping disorders, and be able to notify their parents to help prevent any long-term damage.

Kalra was also quoted as saying “More than 40 million children in the western world have allergies. In addition, the incidence of allergy-related respiratory diseases is a risk factor for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing, the association between Atopy and habitual snoring in young children has not been studied. “Now that we know how prevalent snoring is in children this young and that it is more common in children with positive Atopic status, parents and health care professionals can take appropriate action.”

With this knowledge, you can now tell whether or not your own children are at a risk for suffering from sleep disorders. If snoring occurs, it is important to get your child screened for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. The effects it can have on a child if left untreated are irreparable. Polysomnography tests are available at most local hospitals. They are painless, and they are often covered by insurance.

Snoring is a pesky problem that can really make your nights dreary. One thing that many people don’t know, however, is exactly how much trauma their snoring may be causing for their spouse. It is a known fact that bedmates of a snorer generally lose around one hour of sleep per evening due to the fact that their spouse’s snoring is not conducive to proper sleeping patterns. Known as spousal arousal syndrome, this overlooked facet of snoring can cause the bedmate to wake up as many as 21 times per hour, damaging their night’s rest in an irreparable way. This can result in a day time fatigue, causing a host of problems from restlessness to trouble concentrating on simple tasks. As a side effect of the lack of proper sleep, the affected person often has poor performance at work and may feel irritable, ill, or unable to think well.

According to a recent survey, as much as 80% of snoring couples sleep apart. This can affect the happiness of a relationship, not to mention the sex life. Snoring can be a bigger problem than you’d think! When snoring begins to affect the livelihood of your relationship, it is important to take action. If your spouse’s snoring is giving you troubles, here are a couple guidelines to addressing the issue:

First off, its most important to discuss the issue with your spouse. If you do not have a solid line of communication about the problem, there’s no way it can ever be solved. Let your spouse know about the problems that spousal arousal syndrome can cause.

Next, you should examine the factors that contribute to snoring, and see if any of them could be reasons for your spouses problem. Common reasons for snoring include consumption of alcohol, excess weight, sleeping on your back, and medications such as anti-histamines or sleeping pills. Read up on all the reasons that people snore, so that you can accurately diagnose the problem that your spouse is facing. For most of the reasons that people snore, there are effective methods of stopping the problem. For instance, if your spouse has trouble with snoring only when they are sleeping on their back, try putting a regular tennis ball into a sock, and pinning it to the back of their pajamas. This will make it uncomfortable for your spouse to sleep on their back, forcing them to sleep on their side or on their chest, fixing the problem.

If you can’t seem to pin down the reason that your spouse is having these nightly problems, it is important to check with a health care professional about the possibility of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a breathing problem which can cause many more issues than a standard snoring problem, and needs to be addressed.

Overall, make sure that your spouse understands that you respect them and that you need to get over this problem for the common good of the two of you. Snoring is a fixable problem that just needs some attention to be remedied. The both of you will be feeling much better after a little research and work!
